Today I was a super smart lady and decided to lock my wallet and phone in my glove compartment while we went swimming at a new rec center. I want to bring my wallet with me in the car, but I don't always want to take it in with me and since my vehicle is a magnet for thieves I thought it was a brilliant idea. There was some resistance when I used the key to lock it but I didn't think twice. When Mister and I left the pool I went to unlock the compartment and it wouldn't budge one way or another. I turned it so hard that I thought I was going to break the key off inside the lock. We came home and I tried the spare key and it didn't work. Super weird, if you ask me. Blaine tends to think about situations in his sweet little head constantly. He thinks of new solutions, problems created by the current problem, solutions to the future problems, and what it's all going to cost. After about 30 minutes of failed attempts at opening the lock I gave up and we went about our business. Then Blaine pipes up and says, "Mama, Daddy's key is our only hope!" I had to ask him to repeat himself, which he did, because seriously what five year old uses the expression, "our only hope."
Then there is HG who has moved up to the primary classroom at her preschool. Her little 2.5 year old body is in class with 3-6 year olds. This is totally crazy to me! She fits right in, of course, and hasn't skipped a beat. We were at the park yesterday and while Blaine played with his therapist, Ms. Ali, HG and I walked along the bank of this little creek. She was walking in front of me, leaning ever-so-slightly forward (her classic walk) with her hands behind her back, clenched together. Then she says, "So, Mama, what plans do you have today?" I think I laughed out loud because it was so out of the blue and she was treating me like an old friend. And before I could answer she continued with, "And what have you been up to lately? What are you and Daddy doing later?" I tried to answer her questions but she just kept on with her own personal walk-in-the-park dialogue. Too cute.
There was no school today because of this weird April snow "storm" we had. Wind, rain, snow and school don't mix apparently. When I was a kid there had to be like three feet of snow on the ground before school was cancelled, but not here. I think they (Coloradans) were hoping for something much bigger, but it was a puny storm and frankly, kids should've been in school! But we made the best of it and went swimming with Ms. Ali and her daughter, whom Blaine likes to entertain and play with.
Speaking of swimming, Mister finally started his private swim lessons at the Y in preparation for their summer swim team. His teacher said that his back stroke is awesome, as is his freestyle. The butterfly and breast stroke were just introduced to him, so he's got some learning to do but she felt confident that in eight lessons he would be ready to join the team. I am hoping and praying that he sticks with it and that after he gains some momentum and feels what it is like to work hard and see improvement that he feel intrinsically motivated to keep going! What he's really excited about is two weeks at Thorne Nature Experience this summer. He is eager to get outside and get his hands dirty with other kids his age. We're excited for him too!
We received some sad news this morning. Pop's mom, Anita, passed away this morning. We had the pleasure of spending some special time with Anita over the last several years. She came to our house in Austin several times for special birthday events, we saw her at Marie and Jeff's a few times when we were in Dallas and my favorite memory of her was the Mother's Day we spent with her. She had her three boys and their families with her and we were blessed to be a part of that gathering. The saying: 'Sweet little ol' lady" came from Anita, I swear! She was so gentle and caring and I always loved getting little squeezes from her when we would see her. She had been sick for some time and I know it was hard for her family to journey with her, so our hearts and prayers go out to Marie, Jeff and their entire family as they mourn the loss of the matriarch of their family. Rest in peace, sweet Anita. We will all miss you.
