A Star Again

Blaine was a rock star on the soccer field again today - we are so proud of him.  He ran every time Coach put him in the game and he kicked the ball every chance he got.  I think the best part for us was the fact that he actually looked happy and was having a good time.  Way to go Son!

Here are two (long) videos of Blaine playing soccer. Look for #4.

There's our Mister... running after the ball.

Hannah Likes Soccer

Atleast someone is getting use of the soccer ball...

Sitting at Soccer

It's a good thing he's cute because if it were for his performance this weekend Blaine would not be getting any awards.  Blaine's first soccer game left much to be desired.  Much happened prior to the game that probably contributed to his lack of interest.  Friday at school he was given an evil gluten-filled snack (which sent him into a 24+ hour downward spiral), he didn't sleep a wink on Friday night, then right before the game he was going down the slide, got his shoelace stuck in the slide, flipped over and hit his head on the way out.  Daddy caught him just before he hit the ground but that was the icing on the cake for him.  Poor darlin' cried for a long time and then when we put him on the field to play he was less than interested.  He literally stood in one place, chewing and sucking on the front of his shirt for a good ten minutes.  He didn't even walk down the field and when the ball rolled in front of him he just stared.  He finally came and sat down on David's lap to watch the rest of the game.  And then he fell asleep in the car five minutes after we left the fields.

We did have fun before the game.  We took him out for a big country breakfast at Cracker Barrel, which he enjoyed.  Hannah practiced her "chill" pose while we ate.

Then it was game time.  Let's start with the cuteness factor.  You be the judge:

Cute, right?  #4... I kind of wish he were #2 since he was born on 2/22 at 2:22 but #4 is good too, since Hannah was born at 4:44.

Oh, the things mothers think about :)

Blaine's coach said that we shouldn't be too frustrated - his son apparently sat on the sideline for the first two seasons.  Wow - that's a lot of games!  We decided that we're going to keep him in soccer through the summer and every week we'll suit up and sit with him on the sidelines.  Maybe his breakthrough game will be next weekend... a parent can hope, can't they?

A List

I have been trying to think of a topic for this post but nothing is coming to mind so this is going to be a mindless dump.  In fact, I'd like to do this in the form of a list (because I love lists so much.)

1. Blaine hurt his elbow at school yesterday.  Apparently he cried and cried about it but when they really looked at his elbow it seemed fine.  This is how serious it was:  The director of the school asked Blaine if he wanted to write a letter to us about the accident.  He said yes and she asked how he wanted to start - this was their conversation and the final letter.

Ms. Lisa: How should I start the letter, Blaine?
Blaine: Dear Dad, I hurt my knee.
Ms. Lisa: Your knee?  I thought you hurt your elbow?
Blaine: Oh, yeah - I mean, my elbow.
Ms. Lisa: Ok, so I have, "Dear Dad, I hurt my elbow."
Blaine (looking outside): Out the window I see a mommy bird at the birdhouse.  She's walking on the sidewalk.
Ms. Lisa: Blaine, do you want to write the letter about your elbow or about what you're seeing outside?
Blaine (ponders...): What I see outside.

And so the letter reads:

Dear Dad,
I bumped my elbow.  Out the window I see a mommy bird at the birdhouse.  He's walking on the sidewalk.

And then there are a bunch of marks at the bottom of the paper which are (I guess) his signature.

2. Tomorrow is Blaine's first soccer game.  We hope it's a success and by success I mean, we hope he makes it through the whole game without coming over to us ten times asking for a snack or water and success also means not getting kicked out of the game for aggression.  I bought him new cleats tonight not because he needs them but because they are so dang cute!

3.  Hannah continues to wake up at night so I guess she's still having ear pain even after five full days on the antibiotic.  I'll be glad when she's over this once and for all.  I have been wondering lately if it wasn't the excessive amounts of unnecessary antibiotics she was given when she was only two days old that has made her infections so resistant to medications over the past six months.  It's in the past, so nothing I can do, but could be a factor, right?  Still cute though:

4. We had some pictures taken a few weeks ago by a professional photographer who is actually just starting out and had a great deal on Groupon.  Despite Blaine acting out for most of the session and having a monstrous afro (my dad said it looked like we held Blaine's head outside of the window on the way there), the pictures are very good.  Go to Frolic Foto, click on "Clients", type in "hannah" and you can view our gallery.

5.  The connection between gluten and some of Blaine's challenging behaviors is becoming more and more clear.  I realized the other day that since he's been on a GF diet Blaine has started sleeping through the night.  For years he was up every single night multiple times throughout the night and some nights it took him almost two hours to go to bed.  This issue of him not sleeping obviously caused a lot of problems but since being on a GF diet he has started going to sleep more easily and sleeping through the night without waking up once.  Today at school he was given cornbread, which apparently someone thought was GF (it's not) and this afternoon and evening have been very difficult.  In fact, it's midnight as I write this and I've already been in his room five times calming him down helping him get back to sleep.  This happens every time he's given gluten.

6. I just realized it's midnight after writing #5 and I really need to go to bed.
