Dear Mister,
You're officially 5 years and 12 days old as I write this. You're already picking out things for your 6th birthday (apparently you like birthdays as much as your mother!) You told me today that you want enough balloons to float you down the stairs and that a helium machine should work just fine for that. If you are starting your list now, I can't imagine what it will look like next February.
We went to see Dr. Miller for your 5 year well check and you are still growing. We've been a little bit concerned about that since you're on a medication that can cause problems in that area. You were in the 75th percentile for height and the 55th percentile for weight (fancy for "you're a big guy.") Oh, a funny story for you about going to the doctor: When I told HG that we were going to see Dr. Miller for your appointment she gasped, her mouth dropped open, and she said, "Oh my gosh, Blaine's a doctor too!!!" Apparently we call you Blaine Miller so much she thinks its your last name. Cute. You do want to be a doctor someday... :)
Dr. Miller had no concerns about your physical development and I encouraged him to write in his notes that you were "the most handsome five year old" he had ever seen but he didn't seem to think those were important medical notes.
You have made tremendous progress at school and apparently we were not very clear about the Kindergarten timeline because the day before your 5th birthday you told your teachers at preschool that "this will be my last day. Tomorrow I turn five, so I'll be going to Kindergarten." After some explanation you understood, and (reluctantly) went back to preschool. You still only have eyes for Siri as a friend, but you are getting more comfortable around kids these days and your teachers write me notes when you dance, sing and take part in social activities. Everybody is very proud of you when you step out of your comfort zone. While you're not interested in socializing, you are very interested in soaking up new knowledge. You love to learn and you love to teach others about what you've learned (not to mention you've taught your teachers a few things about nature and animals - your favorite subject.) Your love for books is still present and you are really doing a phenomenal job in the emerging reader stage you're in. I love watching you sound out words and attempt to write them at the same time and you have plenty of sight words recognized already.
Your favorite things to do are basically anything having to do with running, jumping, hitting, climbing, swimming, wrestling... ummm, being physical. Your other favorite pastime is playing video games. Thankfully the iPad is full of educational games but that doesn't mean that you don't try to play "Angry Birds" more than any kid alive. You are very good at these games and you use your excellent bargaining and sales techniques to 'earn' more time any chance you get. Currently you are taking private swim lessons, which you have really taken to, more than any other lesson you've taken. You have your first male instructor, which I think has made a difference for you. Our goal is to prepare you for swim team because you have told us on more than one occasion that you want to "swim, be on TV and get paid for it."
Almost six years ago Daddy and I started this blog because of you. I was pregnant with you, our first born, and we wanted to remember as many moments of your life as we could. We've been on an exciting ride with you. Your sweet and curious mind astound us and keep us smiling. And you've always been sensitive, but you are becoming more affectionate in your 'old age' too. Mama loves that :)
We love you, Mister.
Mom and Dad
